We do three levels of report at Unique Critique:

Full report, between 16 and 20 pages, this includes a careful read of your full manuscript and will cover all aspects of your work that requires attention Report lite, this includes a read of your full manuscript with brief notes on the areas that require attention Submission package, this includes a read of chapters 1-3 and includes advice on the covering letter and synopsis

Full report: may be structured along these lines (although every report is unique and needs will differ):

General comments, Presentation, Narrative structure and plot, Opening, Characterisation, Description (including Show not Tell), Technical Style, Consistency and Believability

Timing

Please bear in mind that all reports require a thorough reading of your work, time spent analysing what works and what doesn't and time to write the report. Although we appreciate that you are keen to move on with your writing and excited to receive your report, please allow up to six weeks for delivery once you have sent your payment and manuscript. If there is a reason for particular urgency, do mention this when booking and we will aim to accommodate you for an additional fee.

After service

We understand that you may have questions following receipt of your report. A ten-minute Skype or FaceTime discussion with your reader is included with all reports.

Using your report

When you receive your report, it may come as a shock. After all, if you knew about the issues your reader picked up, you wouldn't have needed Unique Critique in the first place. So make sure that you only open your report when you have a bit of time.

We recommend reading with tea and chocolate alongside!

Read carefully and slowly. Don't panic. Write a list of things that you think need to be done. Then step back and take a bit more time. Consider, do you agree with your reader's points?

Reread your report once you've had a chance to take a step backwards. How can you use your reader's suggestions to improve your work?

Remember, everybody involved in this process wants you to succeed. At Unique Critique we want you to get a book deal and we will do our best to give you the most helpful advice.

What if I am not satisfied with my report?

At Unique Critique, we see our work as a partnership - you and your reader are going on a journey, we are excited to read your work, delighted to be able to offer experience and advice and we hope that you will be happy with the time we spend together.

You may disagree with comments that your reader has sent, but do remember that everyone in this process wants your book to do well. Our readers have industry experience, have worked with a number of different editors and have experience working as readers, but that doesn't mean that they are infallible. If you truly disagree with your comments, try and think about why they were made - what in your manuscript isn't working quite as you intended to make your reader think this way? What can you change to make your intention clearer?

While we expect you to be fully satisfied with your report, we also understand how difficult it is to hear even the most constructive of criticism, so please do only purchase a Unique Critique if you have carefully considered the following questions:

  1. Why am I getting this report? - is it to get advice on how to get my work to a higher standard, ready for publication?
  2. Am I really ready to hear criticism of my work?
  3. Am I prepared to act on any criticism I might receive?
  4. Do I have the time to act on the report that I am sent?
